SGS has signed a strategic alliance with serialization tech firm Kezzler AS to increase monitoring of its customers’ supply chains.

Kezzler’s technologies will enable SGS to identify hold ups and inefficiencies in the supply chain, manage product recalls, and exchange information with its customers in real time

The  technology helps track and trace products on a mass scale by digitalizing goods with unique "digital DNA."

Paul Laland, Kezzler’s vice president, corporate affairs, told Outsourcing-Pharma.com it is focusing on mass-scale serialization technologies that are time- and cost-effective.

“Kezzler’s patented digital mass encryption technology maintains speed even at high volumes. Code generation and verification using our encryption algorithm takes place in milliseconds,” Laland said.

Work between SGS and Kezzler has begun and there is a joint project team in place.

New regulations

Laland said the strategic alliance agreement is a response to increased demand in the market.

“There is currently tremendous momentum and need for mass serialization technologies,” said Laland.

“New regulatory and legislative requirements as well as consumer demands for greater transparency will force global companies to serialize individual products,” he added.

The US-based Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) is enforcing the second phase of its serialization rules in November of this year. The legislation requires manufactures give unique serialization codes to all saleable units of pharmaceutical products.

From 2018, the EU Falsified Medicines Directive is demanding a unique serialization code on every saleable unit of drug product intended for patient dispensation.
